In the 1970s, Datsun became popular because of its 240Z sports car which was powered by an inline six-cylinder engine, and was desirable for its blend of style, performance and affordability. Nissan began selling automobiles globally under the Nissan name in 1981. The '80s also witnessed Nissan's introduction of a tuning division called Nismo for the development of performance-based automobiles and accessories. Nissan also constructed a Tennessee-oriented plant and brought its production to American shores.
