Ford Mustang is one of the most popular American classic cars. Ford Mustang was first released on 17 April 1964 at the New York World’s Fair being the most successful launch of that time. John Najjar, the Ford executive came up with the name “Mustang” as he was a great fan of the World War II fighter plane, the P-51 Mustang. Because of its sporty features with short rear boots and long bonnets, Mustang became the first American ‘pony car’.
In order to promote the Mustang, a publicity campaign both on national press and TV, was launched in 1964. The appearance of Mustang in the James Bond movie ‘Goldfinger’ in 1964 and Steve McQueen’s film ‘Bullitt’ in 1974 also helped in boosting its fame. Due to its increasing popularity, over a million Mustangs were sold in the first eighteen months of its production.

Mustang’s models of 1964-1966 had a sports car look, with long hoods and shorter rear units. The interior of the car included two seats in the front and a small backseat. The models from ‘67 to 68’ had an aggressive looking widened hood. The Mustangs of that time had a larger grill and an improved reflection of the engine units.

In 1969 and 1970, Mustang was further improved and was given a better look. The Mustangs of that time were longer than the models of the past and were heavier as well. Moreover, the headlights were housed inside the grill this time, instead of protruding. The heaviest models of Ford Mustang were put on the market from 1971 to 1973.
A lot of improvements in the guts were made during the 70’s and rack-and-pinion steering was manufactured from 1974-1978. The longest incarnation of Ford Mustang from production point of view, was the third generation of the car. The interior of the car was designed to fit four people in it. The car had a 302 with a better camshaft and an updated exhaust system as well as new valves. Ford Mustang was a fast and sporty American car in its third generation and was the best of all cars as far as performance is concerned.

Then came the fourth generation of the Mustang in which the car was further innovated in the guts.
Mustang’s fifth generation hit the market in 2005. The new models of Mustang are similar to the Mustangs of the 60’s.
