Undoubtedly, Hummer SUVs hold a reputable and classy status in the automobile market. The manufacturers have always tried to improve their offerings as much as possible. The vehicles were exclusively designed for military purposes. These vehicles have a very interesting tank-like appearance. And it is not just the appearance that makes these crawlers different from all others but the tank-like nature of the Hummer SUV gives it a more elegant and unique touch.
It was back in the 1940s when Willys-Overland Company came up with the all-time popular vehicle”Jeep” and the popularity of this vehicle made Henry J. Kaiser change Willys-Overland company to Kaiser-Jeep. In 1970, Kaiser-Jeep was purchased by the American Motors and the name of the company was again changed to the Jeep Corporation. At that time, Jeep was crafting vehicles through two divisions: the Commercial Products division in Toledo, Ohio, and the Government Products division in South Bend, Indiana.
Later, the Government Products division turned onto a completely owned subsidiary called the AM General. During1980s, the company, now possessed by the LTV Corporation, crafted an auto for participation in a contract offered by the U.S. Army. This precisely designed vehicle was named as the High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV, or Humvee). In 1983, AM General entered into a production contract that demanded the delivery of 55,000 vehicles within five years
In the early '90s, AM General's Humvees played an important role during the Persian Gulf War. It was then, when this vehicle started to gain more popularity in true sense i.e. beyond the military circles. This popularity led to the launch of a civilian version of the Humvee, given the name the “Hummer”, in 1992. In 1999, General Motors purchased the brand and started developing and marketing future Hummer SUVs.
