Not many cars are as instantly recognized as the Mini. Mini, the British-born car is appreciated for its cheerful good looks and diminutive dimensions, it has enthused fanatical devotion both in and outside the U.S. The brand was discontinued for a short time, but in 2002, it was revived with help from BMW. The reincarnated Cooper, effectively paying homage to the unique Mini Cooper of the 1960s, combines a sporty, BMW-engineered chassis having a space-efficient interior and a generous list of standard features.
In 1959, the manufacture of Mini commenced. The British Motor Corporation (BMC) in England produced the original Mini motorcar with its mission to create a lightweight, nimble four-passenger coupe that took up least space. In the rise of the Suez crisis, the United Kingdom was exposed to fuel rationing and the consumers in Britain shouted for automobiles which offered best possible fuel efficiency.
The coupe was at first put up for sale under BMC's Austin and Morris brands. In 1961, the name Mini appeared. Though it had only 34 horsepower, the Mini was the perfect urban coupe and proved trendy in jam-packed cities of Europe. John Cooper, in 1961, constructed Formula One racecars, he put his magical hands on the Mini and the outcome was the amazing Mini Cooper. The Cooper S model produced by him had (at 76 horsepower) over doubles the yield of the standard Mini. Due to the blend of power, together with suspension tweaks and a number of really good driving, Mini won the Monte Carlo Rally four years in a row (1964-'67). In 1962, the marquee showed on the American shores.
In the 1960’s, new variations on the theme of the car came with the launch of automobiles like the Mini Pickup and the Mini Moke, resembling a unusual cross between a Mini and a Jeep. The brand appeared in the 1969 film, The Italian Job. Over 2 million Mini motorcars had been produced by the end of the 60’s.
Mini continued its production in Europe throughout the '70s and '80s. Over 5 million Minis had been produced globally by the mid 80’s. BMW Group acquired the brand in 1994. In 2000, the marquee went on hiatus, but was brought back to life in 2002 with the introduction of the entry-level, front-drive Mini Cooper hatchback.
