Part of the General Motors family, the Pontiac brand is home to a lot of of the auto manufacturer’s more performance-based vehicles. Presently, the marquee presents a wide range of sporty coupes and SUVs.

In 1907Pontiac started off as the Oakland Car Company of Pontiac. Edward Murphy founded it. In 1909, General Motors acquired the brand. In 1926, Oakland launched the first Pontiac automobile. It was dubbed by the "Chief of the Sixes," the car had a six-cylinder engine and made its first appearance at that year's New York auto show. The car was so booming that the Oakland name was terminated in favor of Pontiac. Pontiac made cars, sedans and wagons throughout the 1930s and '40s. An exceptional styling cue of Pontiac coupes from the mid-'30s to the mid-'50s was recognized as "Silver Streak," that was a set of art-deco-inspired chrome "speed lines" which ran up above the length of the hood to the base of the windshield.

In the 1950s, the Pontiac Bonneville was introduced. Pontiac made its major impact yet with the formation of the GTO option for the Tempest in 1964. Pontiac produced the first "muscle car." by furnishing the coupe with the powerful 389 cubic-inch V8 from the full-size car line.

The oil crisis of the 1970s made fuel efficiency a main concern for a lot of car buyers. Pontiac created compact autos like the Ventura and Phoenix a main part of its lineup. The 1980s observed the introduction of the two-seat Pontiac Fiero. In the 1990s, the introduction of Pontiacs like the Sunfire and Montana minivan was observed. New models like the Solstice, Vibe and G8 made Pontiac a brand to think about in various segments. But, in 2008 and 2009, GM’s financial problems have resulted in the company's decision to end Pontiac as a brand. However, it is anticipated that 2010 will be Pontiac's final year for new models.
