Yugo cars have a very old and interesting history. It was in the late 30’s when the “Ford trucks” were designed specifically for the Yugoslavian Army. Later, Zavodi Crvena Zastava (means: "Red Flag Plant") began producing passenger cars in 1954. It was back in 1971 when Zastava launched it's own version of the Fiat 128. It had a modified rear panel, and soon was presented as a hatch back, a style that had never been promoted in Italy. The company then came with the Yugo 45 which was related to the Fiat 127 but having a different appearance. The 1100cc and the 1300cc versions were made available in the USA as the Yugo GV, GVL, GVS, GVX, GV Plus, and the Cabrio. In the 80's the factory began manufacturing trucks under IVECO license with the names of the passenger cars being changed from Zastava to Yugo.
During 1988, the company launched a new model called the “Florida”. The model being similar to Fiat Tipo was chiefly exported to the eastern European countries. Strangely, in around 1985, the Yugo gained the staus of being the cheapest car sold in the USA. fabric upholstery, full carpeting, reclining front seats, rear window wiper/washer, opening rear quarter windows, rear window electric defroster and low fuel warning light were some of its standard features.
With the passage of time the company started redesigning cars and it was in 1990 when innovative models of the “Yugo GV Plus” and Yugo Cabrio were launched. The new generation of Yugo has FIA certificate, therefore it satisfies the European standards. Zastava started producing YUGOs again.
Updated versions of the Yugo Koral model were sold. Standard features included central locking, three steps rotary switch on the dash marked "0", "1", "2", "3" for Headlamps leveling control in four height positions, 4-speakers Car Audio system, Electric windows, Folding Electro-adjustable Side-view mirrors, Alloy wheels and optional Air Conditioner and also an optional Renault-designed three-speed automatic transmission.
Production of the car has come to an official end with the last he last Yugo (No.794,428) being cuilt on November 11, 2008. here are many who race and tune Yugos but the biggest collector of Yugos resides in Minnesota, US, with a total 20 Yugos as of 2008, including a yellow Cabrio from the movie The Birdcage starring Robin Williams
